sunday Mixed Media

Indulge your adventurous side and explore your creativity by combining different media and materials into your paintings!

We will use paint, collage, stamping, and multiple drawing implements to produce richly layered works that combine structure and improvisation.

You will learn new techniques and approaches through demos, inspirational artists, and 1-on-1 guidance from the instructor. Students will develop both technical skills and personal style.

Join us as we indulge ourselves in this Sunday afternoon workshop!

Supply List:
  • A variety of PAPERS! (from books, old drawings, children’s art, letters, etc.)
  • Acrylic paints (black, white and a few colors)
  • Fluid Matte Medium OR soft gel
  • Variety of brush sizes and a wide chip brush
  • Plastic scraper (or old credit cards)
  • ​Two 10” x 10” cradled wood panels or masonite boards
  • Scissors/craft knife
  • Permanent black marker or sharpie

Optional Supplies:
  • stencils
  • stamps
  • paint pens or acrylic markers
  • spackling compound
  • sandpaper, 100 / 120 grit
  • whatever you have that will leave marks or create texture in your art...metal tools, burlap, corrugated cardboard, foil, wood skewers, etc...bring it!

About the instructor

Robin Sanford Roberts

Robin Sanford Roberts is an artist and theatrical scenic designer working in models and mixed media. She makes art in studio #5 at Art on 30th. She has designed scenery for multiple theatres including the Old Globe Theatre, San Diego Repertory, Denver Center Theatre Company, Portland Center Stage and Broadway.

She holds a degree in Architecture from LSU and a MFA in Scenic Design from UCSD. She also studied at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, Fontainebleau and at Sir John Cass School of Art, London Polytechnic. Robin teaches and designs scenery for the undergraduate theatre department at USD.

“I have an obsession with old books and other ephemera. The fragments and bits of pieces come together to make a new piece. I enjoy working with pieces from the past that have a history of a previous life.”

Art on 30th is ADA approved in all public spaces of the building with a wheelchair accessible front entrance and a handicap parking spot in our back parking lot with a ramp that leads to our wheelchair accessible back entrance. Studios on the 2nd level are privately leased and not part of our public space; artists can apply for wheelchair accessible studio spaces on the 1st floor as part of our Coworking Studios that we offer to the public for a monthly fee  with no commitment/contract (see our Rentals page for more info).
