intro to WATERCOLOR painting

Capture the beauty of the world around you in a loose and fluid style using watercolors! 

In this course, we will focus on drawing for watercolor, color mixing, brush work and critique. Explore how to find the perfect subject to paint, techniques for better composition, editing tips, how to manage the amount of time it takes to paint your piece, and how to apply "the finishing touches."

Students will receive positive feedback and lots of 1-on-1 guidance from the instructor. You'll walk away with confidence and a greater understanding of how to create beautiful paintings in the watercolor medium.

All skill levels are welcome! 

Supply List:
  • variety of Daniel Smith watercolors
  • Escoda brushes: 1 mop and 1 synthetic round (from their "Perla" line)
  • Fabiano paper 100% cotton at 300 grams
  • paint palette
  • white masking tape
  • soft pencil led
  • ​a backing of light wood, large enough for your paper size
  • and your beautiful smiles :)

Optional Supplies:

Gabriel Stockton is passionate about watercolor; his beautiful work can be seen all around the globe, displayed in private collections, galleries, and museums. Gabriel's attractive paintings have received numerous juried awards from Master artists, esteemed art collectors and museum curators. Respected by many, Gabriel Stockton is a Salmagundi juried Artist, Artist resident of Spanish Village Art Center, LPAPA Artist Member & Member Show Director of San Diego Watercolor Society, and associations.

​In addition, Gabriel is a sought-after instructor for his skillful eye, encouraging words, and fun out-going workshops. He's ready to fill your notebooks with graceful ways to create beautiful watercolor paintings at ease. Gabriel Stockton captures the spirit of his subjects with light, passion, and magnificence.

Art on 30th is ADA approved in all public spaces of the building with a wheelchair accessible front entrance and a handicap parking spot in our back parking lot with a ramp that leads to our wheelchair accessible back entrance. Studios on the 2nd level are privately leased and not part of our public space; artists can apply for wheelchair accessible studio spaces on the 1st floor as part of our Coworking Studios that we offer to the public for a monthly fee  with no commitment/contract (see our Rentals page for more info).
