Mid-Century Masters
"Bay Area figurative movement"

Picture
Prerequisite for this more advanced class is Intro to Abstract.

Mid-Century Masters explores new abstract expressionist themes, styles, and artists each session. This session is about the Bay Area Figurtive movement and artists like Nathan Oliveira.

During the 1950s, a few painters in the San Francisco Bay Area shifted from the prevailing style of Abstract Expressionism in favor of a return to figurative painting. They created what would come to be known as "Bay Area Figurative Art."

In this class, students will learn about:
  • The artists from this movement as inspiration for the class: David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and few more surprises!
  • Each artists' unique style and how to paint figures with a more abstract composition—bridge the gap between abstract and objective art!

Supply List:
  • various acrylic colors
  • various brushes
  • quality paper towels like Viva or Blue Shop
  • all your paint stash goodies and supplies
  • various found papers or materials to collage with
  • 1-2 medium sized canvases, wool panels or mixed media paper

Class Info:
  • Next session: May 24 - June 14
  • Cost $165 (4 classes)

Shirin Nikoukari

I started painting when I was young. I moved to the United States in my 20's and mix my Persian culture with my abstract inspirations. The pomegranate is a sacred symbol for me and often shows in my work as well as Persian Calligraphy. As I have evolved, my work has become more abstract.
